If you didn’t see the first post in this series, click here (and watch the video – it’s wicked funny!). Today, Dear Danglers, I’m going to incur the wrath of countless parental units. I am going to tell you to go do what you love. BUT!!! You have to be smart about it, or you’ll be prancing around in Times Square in an Elmo costume when you’re 50. Not sexy. Let’s begin.
Pave the way for success: A Crash Course
If you have debt, pay it off – you’re going to need every penny to invest in your new venture. No more mojitos or take-out – it’s Ramen time. Pay. It. Off.
Become a saver – get at least eight months’ worth of living expenses in the bank. You heard me.
Get some clarity. What exactly would you like to do? The road to becoming Miss Tassels, The Burlesque Goddess, is a great deal different than joining the cast of Cirque Eloize. Unsure? Spend some time exploring the possibilities in your industry and figure it out.
Immerse yourself. Volunteer, network, see shows, take classes, scour YouTube, make lunch dates, sleep with a director or two (KIDDING, please do NOT tell your parents I told you to do that), ask questions, and soak it all up like a sponge.
Ask some tough questions. Are you really good at what you’re passionate about? Would someone pay you to do it? Success is a combination of passion and genuine skill. What are your strengths? Where do they shine? Find THAT angle and work it! There’s more than one way to skin the cat (old school trapezers, that was for you).
Make a road map. How will you get to where you want to go? What freelance work will you use to support yourself between gigs or during lean times? Do you have children or people counting on you? What about health insurance? (Freelancers Union is a good place to start for this). This one’s IMPORTANT – you don’t want to have to jump back into a 9-5 because of poor planning.
Do it right – invest in yourself as a business. Your promotional materials should be flawless, your costume professional, and your act ready to go. No tired unitards or blurry photos from a burner party!
Quit your soul-sucking day job and take the leap! Not everything has to be perfect, just make sure your finances are in order and you know what you’ll do for money (and, ahem, what you won’t do). Get creative and make it work! Lovelies, hear me now: this is your life. Will you let your light shine bright? Then go where you are needed most, and shine, shine, shine! Love and pull-ups, Laura
Get that promo video ready! Here’s a great one from the lovely and talented Erika Lemay – she’s amazing!
As always, if you like this post, share it on your blog, FB, Twitter, and wherever else you crazy kids are posting things these days!
